As many of you will know, the South East—and Essex specifically—remains the driest part of the country. Due to a prolonged lack of rain over the last year, lakes and ponds all across Essex are facing a similar crisis right now. This water shortage is a widespread regional issue, rather than one exclusive to Swan Pond. However, we know how much the pond means to our village, so we want to share an update on the specific structural and environmental steps we are taking to look after it.
- Pond Maintenance & Drainage: Essential drainage and pipe investigations have revealed some critical infrastructure issues from the past. When the houses in Swan Walk were built, the original rainwater pipes that historically fed Swan Pond were unfortunately left disconnected. We are trying to find out who is responsible for this and ways to get them reconnected. This means the pond’s only source of water is now a single, small drain located in front of The Smithy, alongside any rainwater that naturally falls into the pond. As this vital drain had become completely blocked, KHPC appointed a contractor to have it fully cleared to restore what water flow is currently available.
- Environmental & Ecological Monitoring: We have recently commissioned both an Environmental Report and an eDNA water analysis to check the pond for the presence of great crested newts. We are currently waiting on the results of both assessments to ensure we protect our local wildlife habitats and make the best decisions for the pond’s future.
- Looking Forward: Both the environmental and ecological monitoring, alongside our pipework research, are part of a wider, dedicated project. This ongoing project aims to find a viable solution to help increase the natural rainwater flow back into the pond. For now, we will clear all the debris from the pond and find out if the clay seal needs to be replaced.
- Water Fowl Refuge & Reed Growth: On a positive note, the newly installed refuge for our local water fowl (the duck house) is officially in place and operational. You may have noticed that the reeds are currently taking over the pond and blocking the view of it. Please rest assured that these will be cleared in due course. However, we must wait for the findings of our environmental reports first to ensure we do not disrupt any nesting wildlife or protected species.
- A Difficult Reality for Local Wildlife: With the ongoing dry weather, it is very likely that the pond might dry out completely this year. Sadly, this means a lot of the fish will not be able to survive. We have thoroughly explored emergency options, such as filling the pond using hosepipes or requesting assistance from the fire brigade. Unfortunately, these options are not suitable or viable for a natural habitat of this type.
- The wooden seat: We are looking into quotes to fix it or buying a new one. Please bear with us, it will be done asap.
