What is the Parish Council?
The Parish Council is the lowest tier of government and its aims are to represent and serve the residents of Kelvedon Hatch. Councillors are elected to the Parish Council every four years; in the case of casual vacancies, the Parish Council has the power to co-opt members. The Parish Council is a non-political body. Kelvedon Hatch Parish Council is responsible for the provision and maintenance of:
- Bus shelters/seats;
- Children’s play area in Poors’ Field;
- Swan Pond and its green;
- War Memorial;
- Planters;
- Village notice boards.
The Parish Council also supplements Brentwood Borough Council’s work by organising extra litter picks and by providing extra bins. The Parish Council can make comments on planning applications on behalf of residents. The Parish Council has the power to make bye-laws and to spend a limited amount of money for the benefit of the community.
The Parish Council receives its funding (called a precept) from Brentwood Borough Council through its collection of Council Tax. It also receives some funding through advertisers in the Village News newsletter.
